Woman at the Well

Of the many paintings of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well, we find this one the most appealing. The scene is natural and relaxed. We like how friendly the two seem together. The painting is realistic yet at the same time idealized. The play of sunlight and shadows, the stones, the old trees, they all add to the calm of the moment. The picture feels very comfortable to us. It is just dawning on the woman that this strange man is not just nice, but that he is a big deal. She is about to realize he is the Messiah. In some ways, we can imagine ourselves talking to Jesus like this.

Henryk Siemiradzki (1843-1902) was a Polish painter who made his living in Rome. He is known mostly for his scenes from ancient Greece and Rome and from the New Testament. His paintings are usually large, perfectly executed in what's called the Academic style, with a psychological realism in the subjects.
